The importance of interconnecting the melodic lines
Friends,
When we first learn triads and arpeggios, we usually play them all over the neck, because we tend to follow the geography of the chords that are moving underneath.
This is very common, also because it’s easier.
But we must realize that if we stay in one area of the neck, we are able to create more interesting melodic lines, simply because we will be forced to make better connections, in a more musical way.
I believe this is a very powerful exercise.
Here are some tips you can try to apply:
Take a simple G Major scale - position I
Create a 2 measures backing track, as follows:
GMaj7 (1 measure) / CMaj7 (1 measure)
Review the GMaj7 and the CMaj7 arpeggios > 2 octaves just to make sure you know it well.
Start improvising with those notes only (8) and without moving to another position.
In the beginning this is quite difficult to achieve. But slowly you will be better at doing it and you will become more musical.
Enjoy!
